The Books in the Home project is a collaboration between Raising Readers in Story County and Mid-Iowa Community Action (Story County Early Head Start and Head Start sites) and Drake University Head Start (Ames site).
Through the generous support from a 2010-2011 United Way in Story County Golf Fore Kids grant, Raising Readers is able to donate a six-book set for each child who participates in the Early Head Start and Head Start programs.
Each of the six quality children's books that children receive includes a book label with early literacy activities that parents can do at home with their child.
Early Head Start and Head Start staff receive educator's guides that focus on early literacy activities to share at family home visits and in the preschool classroom.
“The Books in the Home program helps children have ownership of their own books, which I think is very important. Children are so excited to receive their own book to keep and take home. I enjoy it when I reread a book that was given to children, and they read along with me. The educator's guides provide simple and fun activities that I can easily incorporate into my lesson plans." - Anita, Head Start Lead Teacher, Mid-Iowa Community Action, Inc.
