What is the Harrison Barnes Reading Academy-Summer Reading Buddies program?
Raising Readers in Story County coordinates a FREE 6-week summer tutoring program to promote literacy skills for children finishing kindergarten through finishing 3rd grade who need a little extra help over the summer to maintain their literacy skills. Every child signed up will be paired with a trained reading tutor and will meet twice per week to receive personalized reading sessions. These 45 minutes sessions are held at convenient, supervised sites. Supported by Ames High grad and current Dallas Mavericks forward Harrison Barnes, children in the program will also receive a free Harrison Barnes Reading Academy t-shirt for participating as well as a new book at the end of the program.
Children MUST have completed Kindergarten to participate.
Summer 2018 sites will be located in Ames, Nevada, and Huxley.
When is Summer Reading Buddies?
The 2018 Summer Reading Buddies program will begin on Monday, June 11 and run through Thursday, July 26, with a week off July 2-5. Sign up will begin Spring 2018.
Who Can Sign Up?
Parents/Caregivers can submit an application for their child who has completed kindergarten through those who finished 3rd grade in May/June 2018.
How do I get involved?
Volunteers can submit an application to volunteer and a background check will be conducted. Volunteer orientation will take place prior to the start date.
How Much Does It Cost?
Summer Reading Buddies is completely FREE to all participants! Reading tutors volunteer their time and services to provide literacy support at no cost to the student.
Are Reading Buddies Trained?
Reading tutors are trained with a literacy curriculum developed with the Duffelmeyer Reading Clinic at Iowa State University. The curriculum uses leveled books, word sorts, and other strategies to help children succeed at reading.
How Often Do Tutors Meet With Students?
Tutors and students will meet twice per week. Each session is 45 minutes long.
Where Does the Tutoring Take Place?
