Harrison Barnes Reading Academy-Summer Reading Buddies
What a great summer of Reading Buddies in 2018! We had 136 children, 120 volunteers, 10 site supervisors, 9 sites in Ames, Nevada, and Huxley, and so much support from the community, our RRSC families, RRSC staff and board, and families who made literacy a priority. The children who participated read 87,338 minutes between June 11 and July 26. Dates for the 2019 program will be announced this winter and registration will begin in February.
The 2018 program was supported by the Harrison and Brittany Barnes Foundation, ASSET, Up and Running Software, and the City of Nevada.
What is the Harrison Barnes Reading Academy-Summer Reading Buddies program?
Raising Readers in Story County coordinates a FREE 6-week summer tutoring program to promote literacy skills for children finishing kindergarten through finishing 3rd grade who need a little extra help over the summer to maintain their literacy skills. Every child signed up will be paired with a trained reading tutor and will meet twice per week to receive personalized reading sessions. These 45 minutes sessions are held at convenient, supervised sites. Supported by Ames High grad and current Sacramento Kings forward Harrison Barnes, children in the program will also receive a free Harrison Barnes Reading Academy t-shirt for participating as well as a new book at the end of the program.
Children MUST have completed Kindergarten to participate.
Summer 2018 sites were located in Ames, Nevada, and Huxley.
