Raising Readers in Story County

April 2016 Volunteer Spotlight

   Marytha Pitt!

April’s Volunteer Spotlight is on Marytha Pitt, StoryPals volunteer in Nevada! Marytha is a retired teacher who spent 27 years in Nevada after teaching for ten years in Ohio, Virginia, and Germany when her husband was in the US Army.  For eighteen of those years, she taught kindergarten, and the remainder of the time she taught first and second graders.

After retirement, Marytha knew that she wanted to stay connected with young children, and volunteering for Raising Readers in Story County with our StoryPals program was the perfect way to keep in touch with kids, teachers, and children’s books.  Her favorite StoryPals book is “Wolf’s Chicken Stew” by Keiko Kasza, and she brought the book to life this winter when she read it to Miss Johnson’s preschool class and then made pancakes with them after discovering that some of her StoryPals kids had never had pancakes.

Marytha says that others should volunteer with RRSC and especially StoryPals, because the program is “a great way to interact with the 4-year-olds--they love to listen to stories and discuss them.  It is a fun way to volunteer your time.  I encourage anyone interested in young children to give this a try.  The materials are provided so all you have to do is read and enjoy the kids!!” Marytha appreciates the support and help she has received from RRSC staff and StoryPals coordinator Sue Seaton (also RRSC Board President) and the cooperation she receives from the classroom teachers she has worked with.
