June Volunteer Spotlight
The June Volunteer Spotlight is on our AmeriCorps Volunteer Madeline Miller (which means she's technically not a volunteer!). Madeline, or Maddy, is here this summer as the RRSC K-3 Reading Buddies Program Coordinator and is working with staff to create another great summer literacy program for families in and around Ames. Maddy is originally from Osage, Iowa and is a senior child, adult and family services major at Iowa State University. When asked why she became an AmeriCorps Volunteer, Maddy said, “I decided to serve with AmeriCorps for the summer because I wanted to do something that I have never done before, work with kids, and make an impact within the Ames community. I had heard really great things about the AmeriCorps program and saw many opportunities to grow in my skills while getting to work with kids and families!”.
Maddy’s favorite children’s book is “Where’s My Teddy?” by Jez Alborough and she is enjoying being a part of RRSC this summer! “I am most excited to meet and get to know the children, families, and volunteers that are going to be a part of the program this summer and watch the progress that is made in the kiddos over the six weeks of tutoring!”. A fun fact about Maddy is that she played Maria in her high school’s production of “The Sound of Music”.
“Reading Buddies is a great program for adults to get involved with if you enjoy helping children, reading, or are looking for something to do for 45 minutes twice a week! We are always looking for more volunteers!” To volunteer for K-3 Reading Buddies, register here!
