Make a big difference in the life of a child by volunteering as a tutor for one of our excellent literacy programs!
The StoryPals program provides quality reading experiences and supports the development of language and early literacy skills. The intended goal is to increase participant readiness for school and help lay the foundation necessary for them to become proficient readers. Volunteers are trained to work with students using a research-based Dialogic Reading method to develop background knowledge and vocabulary, grow spoken language skills and encourage children to use reading comprehension elements to retell stories and make literary connections to their personal experiences.
Training and materials will be provided. Volunteer tutors must be at least 14 years old. All volunteers will undergo a background check. Transportation to and from the tutoring site is the responsibility of the tutor. Volunteers are expected to be there 15 minutes prior and 15 minutes after to prepare and complete paperwork.
Reading Buddies is offered to children who are entering first and second grades in the FALL 2023. (Exceptions may be made for 3rd graders demonstrating a high need for decoding skills instruction.) These 45 minute sessions are held twice a week and supervised by RRSC site facilitators.
Sessions begin the week of September 11, 2023, and run through the week of November 13, 2023. Volunteer training occurs on the first day of the program without children present.
Our programs meet at the Ames Public Library, Northminster Church in Ames, North Grand Mall in Ames and Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada. All sites are available to the general public. (Our ACPC participants will meet at Northminster Church, Ames Boys & Girls Club members will meet at North Grand Mall, and Nevada Boys & Girls Club members will meet at Memorial Lutheran Church.)
