Create an Account on Vome
- Go to vomevolunteer.com
- In the upper right hand corner of the screen, find "Sign Up Today"
- Click sign up today and select sign up as a volunteer from the dropdown
- Fill in the requested information and create your account
- Check your inbox for an email from Vome with a code to authenticate your account. If it doesn't arrive in your inbox, check your spam folder.
Fill Out the General Volunteer Interest Form
- Log into your Vome account
- Locate the left sidebar, find "Find an organization", and select it.
- Type in the following information in the search fields
- Organization name: Raising Readers in Story County
- Address: 2801 Grand Ave., Ames, IA, 50010. Select this address when it appears in the dropdown menu.
- Radius: 5
- Click the search button and locate "Raising Readers in Story County" under results.
- Click the Raising Readers in Story County box, and it will pull up our homepage. Select "Follow" to keep up to date with our volunteer opportunities.
- Click the "Get Involved" button on our homepage to fill out our general volunteer interest form.
Reading Program Volunteer Applications
Reading Buddies
This summer, Reading Buddies is scheduled to take place at the Ames Public Library from June 11th - July 30th on Mondays and Wednesdays. Volunteers can join us for the 4:00 PM time, the 5:00 PM time, or both. Reading Buddies provides free literacy sessions for children who are in K-2nd grade. Volunteers will meet with students for personalized reading sessions to help each child with their literacy skills. These 45 minute sessions are held twice a week in the afternoon and supervised by RRSC site facilitators.

Story Pals
This summer, Story Pals will be located at North Grand Mall in Ames (in the RRSC mall space). It will run June 10th - July 17th on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Volunteers are expected to be onsite from 3:45 PM - 5:15 PM. Story Pals is a program that provides quality reading experiences for 4 to 5 year old preschoolers and supports the development of language and early literacy skills. The intended goal is to increase participant readiness for school and help spark the joy of reading.

Small Talk Volunteer Applications
The summer 2025 Small Talk sessions will be hosted at the Ames Public Library on Monday mornings June 9th - August 11th. Volunteers can sign up for as many or as few sessions as they want and they are expected to be onsite from 9:15 AM - 10:45 AM. Small Talk is a program that provides parents with education courses to help them utilize language to boost developmental language skills. Our volunteers work closely with Robyn, the Family Literacy Specialist, to oversee station activities, help with participant check in, and read the weekly story time book.
